A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is a piece made of gold or other precious metal, in which the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers).
Monstrances or ostensories originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or ogival temple (almost always made of silver) bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base was adopted, with a silver or gold lunula or lunette in the middle to visibly place the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a temple but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century onwards, the designs that are most commonly used today, in the form of a radiant sun, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of cherubim heads surrounding the central lunette.
