A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, they adopted the form of a turret or ogival temple (almost always made of silver) bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, with a silver or gold lunula or viril in the middle to visibly place the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the shape of a temple but in the Roman style, and from the end of the 16th century, those that are more commonly used today, in the shape of a radiant sun, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of angel heads surrounding the central lunula.
