The monstrance is also called ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal, where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or ogival shrine (almost always silver), bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, became common, with a lunula or virile of silver or gold in the middle to visibly place the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the end of the 16th century, those that are most commonly used today, in the shape of a radiant sun, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of angel heads surrounding the central virile.
