A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is a vessel of gold or other precious metal, where the consecrated host is placed for the adoration of the faithful (believers).
Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast of Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or pointed temple (almost always silver), bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, was adopted, with a silver or gold lunette or lunette in the middle to visibly display the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a temple but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century onwards, those in the form of a radiant sun, which are more commonly used today, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of cherub heads surrounding the central lunette.
