In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal, where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for adoration by the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, they adopted the form of a turret or ogival shrine (almost always silver) bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, with a silver or gold lunula or lunette in the center to visibly place the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century, those in the form of a radiant sun, which are more common today, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of angelic heads surrounding the central lunette.
