In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, they took the form of a turret or pointed Gothic temple (almost always made of silver), bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, with a locket or silver or gold lunula in the middle to visibly place the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a temple but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century, those more commonly used today, in the form of a radiant sun, began to appear, which in the 18th century featured circles of angelic heads surrounding the central locket.
