A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the gold or other precious metal vessel where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers).
Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or ogival shrine (almost always silver), bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, became common, with a lunula or virile made of silver or gold in the middle to visibly display the host. During the Renaissance, they were also constructed in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century, those more commonly used today began to appear in the form of a radiant sun, which in the 18th century featured circles of angelic heads surrounding the central virile.
