Case diameter: 10 centimeters. For hosts of 8.5 centimeters. A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal, where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria have their origin in the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or ogival shrine (almost always made of silver) bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base was adopted, with a lunula or silver or gold pyx in the middle to visibly place the host. In the Renaissance period, they were also built in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century, those most commonly used today, in the shape of a radiant sun, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of angel heads surrounding the central pyx.
