A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal, where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers).
Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, they adopted the form of a small tower or ogival shrine (almost always silver), bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base, with a silver or gold lunula or lunette in the center to visibly display the host. During the Renaissance, they were also constructed in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century onwards, the most common form today, that of a radiant sun, began to appear. In the 18th century, these featured circles of cherub heads surrounding the central lunette.
