We invite you to browse our product list. Acetre: Holy water cauldron used for liturgical aspersion. Water is collected from the acetre and dispersed with the aspergillum. Aspergillum: Utensil used to sprinkle holy water, consisting of a handle that carries at its end a bunch of bristles or a hollow and perforated metal ball to hold the water. In Christian liturgies, the aspergillum or aspergil is a wooden or metal rod with a hollow metal sphere at its end, filled with a material capable of retaining water. At certain moments of the ritual, especially during blessings, and in the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, a priest dips the end of the aspergillum into a small cauldron of holy water, called an acetre, and sprinkles water with it over the people or objects to be blessed. Originally, a bouquet of the fragrant plant known as hyssop was used. Both the aspergillum and the acetre are usually made of precious metals, typically silver, sometimes richly embossed. Both are part of the traditional iconography of Saint Martha of Bethany, Lazarus's sister.
