Holy Water Bucket: A vessel for holy water used for liturgical asperges. The water is collected from the holy water bucket and dispersed with the aspergillum. Aspergillum: An implement used to sprinkle holy water, consisting of a handle with a bundle of bristles or a hollow, perforated metal ball at its end to hold the water.
In Christian liturgies, the aspergillum is a wooden or metal rod with a hollow metal sphere at its end, filled with a material capable of retaining water. At certain moments of the ritual, especially during blessings, and in the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, a priest dips the end of the aspergillum into a small holy water bucket, called an acetre, and sprinkles water with it over people or objects to be blessed. Originally, a sprig of the fragrant plant known as hyssop was used.
Both the aspergillum and the holy water bucket are usually made of precious metals, typically silver, sometimes richly embossed. Both are part of the traditional iconography of Saint Martha of Bethany, Lazarus's sister
