With the lavabo, the priest celebrating the Eucharist washes his hands just before the prayer over the offerings. The name comes from Psalm 26: "Lavabo in innocentia manus meas" (which can be translated as I will wash my hands in innocence).

It is a sign, as the priest should already have clean hands before beginning the Eucharist. With it, "the desire for interior purification is expressed" (GIRM, 76), which is accompanied by words he says in secret while washing his hands: "Wash away all my iniquity, Lord, cleanse my sin," taken from Psalm 51.

For its use, if the priest is assisted by an acolyte, the acolyte holds a small pitcher with water that he pours over the priest's hands, while holding a bowl underneath them. Afterwards, he offers a manuterge (from Latin: manus + tergere: hands and to wipe), a cloth for the priest to dry himself.

It is a very slightly concave plate used so that particles or drops of the consecrated bread and wine (if given under both species) do not fall to the ground, but remain on this tray, which will subsequently be purified after communion. It is held by the acolyte, positioned to the left of the priest.

Until the moment of communion, it is usually placed on the credence table, a small table or place specially prepared to have what is necessary readily available during the Eucharistic celebration.

It is becoming less and less used in the liturgy, due to the generalization of communion in the hand, but in any case, it is worth bearing in mind what Saint Cyril said after explaining how communion should be received in the hand: "Whatever falls consider it as taken from your own members. For, tell me, if someone had given you gold filings, would you not collect them with utmost care and diligence, taking care that nothing was lost and you were harmed? Will you not strive with much more care and vigilance that not even a crumb falls, which is much more valuable than gold and precious stones?"
