In ancient times, incense was used to purify the environment where important figures, such as the king or emperor, would be or pass through. Due to heat, the atmosphere in a place could become unpleasant, so incense was used to "purify" or "perfume" the environment. This merely material sense can also be mentioned in the liturgy: incense is used to purify the environment where the King of Kings will be. Sense of mystery. A second meaning of the use of incense is the idea of mystery. Psalm 141:2 gives us a beautiful comparison between the rising of incense smoke and the lifting of prayers: "Let my prayer be set before you as incense."
