A monstrance is also called an ostensorium (from the Latin ostentare, "to show"). In the Catholic religion, it is the piece of gold or other precious metal where the host is placed, after being consecrated, for the adoration of the faithful (believers). Monstrances or ostensoria originated with the institution of the feast called Corpus Christi in the mid-13th century. From the mid-15th century, the form of a turret or ogival shrine (almost always made of silver) bristling with pinnacles and supported by an artistic base was adopted, with a silver or gold lunula or viril in the middle to visibly display the host. During the Renaissance, they were also built in the form of a shrine but in the Roman style, and from the late 16th century onwards, those that are now more commonly used began to appear in the form of a radiant sun, which in the 18th century featured circles of angelic heads surrounding the central viril.
