The Last Supper, or Holy Supper, are conventional names for an evangelical episode2 and an artistic theme widely represented in Christian art.
It was the last occasion on which Jesus of Nazareth met with his disciples (the twelve apostles) to share bread and wine before his death. Christianity considers this moment to be the institution of the sacrament of the Eucharist, and these "species" as "the body and blood" of Christ, although each Christian denomination differs in its liturgical celebration (daily Mass and annually the Holy Thursday service) and in its theological interpretation (transubstantiation in Catholicism).[citation needed]
Among the events included in the narrative of this episode are the washing of the feet (Christ washed the feet of the apostles) and two prophecies of Christ, which were fulfilled in the immediate hours: the betrayal of Judas3 and the denial of Peter.4 The commandment of love (Love one another as I have loved you)5 and other phrases of Christ of less evident interpretation,6 which gave rise to the medieval political theory of the two swords, are also stated.
Some popular superstitions (spilling salt, triskaidekaphobia) originate from what is narrated in this evangelical episode.[citation needed]
After dinner, Christ and eleven of the apostles (all but Judas) left the city of Jerusalem, leading to the following episodes that begin the Passion (the prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and the arrest).[citation needed]
