History
The candle was lit with the new fire and also served for the blessing of the baptismal fonts. Others attribute the origin of the Paschal candle to the wax columns that Constantine ordered to be lit on Easter night, and some attribute it to the custom of writing all the movable feasts that depended on Easter on a blessed candle. Later, these feasts were written on a strip of paper or parchment affixed to the candle, as is still practiced in some cathedrals. The Sacred Congregation of Rites decreed on May 19, 1607, that the Paschal candle should be lit on the three solemn days of Easter, White Saturday, and all other Sundays until the Ascension.1 Current liturgy indicates that the Paschal candle is lit during all ceremonies of the Easter season, that is, from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost Sunday, fifty days (eight weeks) later.
