History
The candle was lit with new fire and was also used for the blessing of baptismal fonts. Others attribute the origin of the Paschal candle to the wax columns that Constantine ordered to be lit on Easter night, and some, to the custom of writing all the movable feasts that depended on Easter on a blessed candle. Later, these feasts were written on a strip of paper or parchment that was attached to the candle, as is still practiced in some cathedrals. The Sacred Congregation of Rites decreed on May 19, 1607, that the Paschal candle should be lit on the three solemn days of Easter, Saturday in Albis, and all other Sundays until the Ascension.1 Current liturgy indicates that the Paschal candle is lit during all ceremonies of the Easter season, that is, from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost Sunday, fifty days later (eight weeks).
