Starting: Sunday, April 10 The "Paschal Candle" is the candle that is blessed and lit during the Easter Vigil in the Roman liturgy on the night of Holy Saturday; it is a sign of the resurrected Christ and His light. It is made of beeswax or, at least, must contain a considerable percentage of it, due to its evocation of divinity. Such composition and importance are extensively highlighted in the ancient hymn of the Exultet. Features The candle is renewed precisely during this ceremony, replacing the one from the previous year. Its size can vary, although it must be larger than the other candles in the temple. It usually has a cross painted on one of its sides. History The candle was lit with the new fire and also served for the blessing of the baptismal fonts. Others attribute the origin of the Paschal candle to the wax columns that Constantine ordered to be lit on Easter night, and some, to the custom of writing all the movable feasts dependent on Easter on a blessed candle. Later, these feasts were written on a strip of paper or parchment affixed to the candle, as is still practiced in some cathedrals. The Sacred Congregation of Rites decreed on May 19, 1607, that the Paschal candle be lit on the three solemn days of Easter, Saturday in Albis, and all other Sundays until the Ascension.1 The current liturgy indicates that the Paschal candle is lit during all ceremonies of the Easter season, that is, from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost Sunday, fifty days later (eight weeks).
