The Santo Niño de Atocha (Holy Child of Atocha) is a Child Jesus found in the arms of the Virgin Mary. The story tells that Muslims had imprisoned Christians and did not allow visits from family or friends, only from small children. It was thus that "the Child Jesus himself" decided to keep them company in their tribulation, comforting them and giving them food. Since then, in images, he has been depicted as a Pilgrim Child with huaraches (sandals), a hat, a basket of bread in one hand, and a staff in the other. When the Spanish arrived in the New World, they brought this devotion, and the European workers who emigrated to Plateros, due to the discovery of silver in that region, did not forget it either.
It is said that the Santo Niño de Atocha also helps miners who get trapped in a mine. Many miracles are attributed to him, and millions of people believe in him worldwide.
