The water is collected from the acetre and sprinkled with the aspergillum. Hisopo (Aspergillum): A utensil used to sprinkle holy water, consisting of a handle that has a bunch of bristles or a hollow and perforated metal ball at its end to hold the water. In Christian liturgies, the aspergillum is a wooden or metal rod with a hollow metallic sphere at its end, filled with a material capable of retaining water. At certain moments of the ritual, especially during blessings, and in the liturgy of the Easter Vigil, a priest dips the end of the aspergillum into a small cauldron of holy water, called an acetre, and sprinkles water with it over the people or objects to be blessed. Originally, a bouquet of the fragrant plant known as hyssop was used. Both the aspergillum and the holy water bucket are usually made of precious metals, normally silver, sometimes richly embossed.
