The 'Paschal Candle' is the candle blessed and lit during the Easter Vigil in the Roman liturgy on Holy Saturday night; it is a sign of the resurrected Christ and His light. It is made of beeswax or, at least, must contain a considerable percentage of it, due to its evocation of divinity. Such composition and importance are widely highlighted in the ancient hymn of the Exultet. Characteristics The candle is renewed precisely in this ceremony, replacing the one from the previous year. Its size may vary, although it must be larger than the rest of the candles in the temple. It usually has a cross painted on one of its sides. History The candle was lit with the new fire and also served for the blessing of baptismal fonts. Others attribute the origin of the Paschal candle to the columns of wax that Constantine ordered to be lit on Easter night, and some, to the custom of writing all the movable feasts dependent on Easter on a blessed candle. Later, these feasts were written on a strip of paper or parchment that was attached to the candle, as is still practiced in some cathedrals.
