From: Sunday, April 10\n\nThe 'Paschal Candle' is the candle that is blessed and lit at the Easter Vigil in the Roman liturgy on the night of Holy Saturday; it is a sign of the risen Christ and His light. It is made of beeswax, or at least must contain a significant percentage of it, due to its evocation of divinity. Such a composition and importance are widely highlighted in the ancient hymn of the Exultet.\n\nFeatures\nThe candle is renewed precisely at this ceremony, replacing the one from the previous year. Its size may vary, although it must be larger than the other candles in the temple. It usually has a cross painted on one of its sides.\n\nHistory\nThe candle was lit with new fire and also served for the blessing of baptismal fonts. Others attribute the origin of the Paschal candle to the wax columns that Constantine ordered to be lit on Easter night, and some, to the custom of writing all the movable feasts that depended on Easter on a blessed candle. Later, these feasts were written on a strip of paper or parchment affixed to the candle, as is still practiced in some cathedrals.
